I thought that I would show you how my 2013 hipBees quilt has turned out. I spent most of last week piecing flying geese for the sashing.
I had a big dilemma about the outside border as I really didn't want to make anymore geese. The feedback on IG was to continue the sashing into the border. I spent an evening debating this with myself, knowing that it was the way to go. The next day when I got down to it, I realised that I didn't have enough background fabric to do this. I then had to rethink this all over again. I procrastinated for a day and then decided that what geese I could make, I would put into the border. I also chose a busy print for the border, so that the juncture between the sashing geese and the border wasn't too stark.
I know that I am not completely happy with that border but it is the best compromise that I could come up with. The background is actually a self patterned fabric and is no longer available so buying more wasn't an option.
Now for the full quilt..
As you can see it was windy, and just as I had coerced my men to come outside to hold the quilt top for me, it started to rain heavily and then thunder. These are the best shots that I could come up with. I will try again, when the weather is better and the men are free.
My next problem is how to quilt this one. Do you have any ideas? I would really like some help on this.

Shame about the background fabric, though it did save a lot more geese making I suppose. Such a pretty quilt. I think quilting on the diagonal in a kind of plaid pattern would be good, but I'm not great a quilting suggestions.
ReplyDeleteI like Sarah's suggestion for quilting- or evenly spaced straight line quilting in a grid set on point?
ReplyDeleteHello Di, I have just found your blog. That's a lovely quilt top. I would quilt the geese block lines in the ditch and free motion quilt the squares in between . That way the geese will stand out more. Just a suggestion! Thanks for a lovely welcome at Grantham.
ReplyDeleteI think the quilt is busy enough without doing overly complex quilting, so I might outline quilt round the squares, and just inside the sashing.. or you could throw it at Trudi, I suppose?? It is so good it deserves a good quilting! Well done you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a pretty quilt Di. I don't have any quilt suggestions other than what has already been said but I can't wait to see how it comes out :)
ReplyDeleteLooks so pretty and lovely - well done!!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks fabulous, love the sashing and geese. I'm no expert on quilting but I agree FMQ in the inbetween squares, and in the geese ditches would give a nice effect! Enjoy :o)
ReplyDeleteYou have finished it off perfectly-I love it. I think simple straight lines for the quilting
ReplyDeleteOh my that is ALOT of geese! Looks amazing! My quilting advice is to give it to Trudi! LOL! Jxo
ReplyDeleteGet Trudi to quilt it! It's a beautiful quilt top and I am sure you will be really happy with the finish.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good compromise, I think. Your quilt looks gorgeous. As for quilting, as it's all flying geese maybe a spiral would be fun?
ReplyDeleteIt's a beautiful quilt - it's so frustrating when people suggest things that you know is right but oh so consuming! I like all the quilting suggestions - can't wait to see what you go with x
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous, Di! You did a great job of finishing the borders
ReplyDeleteYour plan worked beautifully, can't wait to see it quilted.... But I've not a clue how!
ReplyDeleteI love it! I would quilt it with an all over stipple or a triangle stipple maybe or I would do lines that followed the geese. However, if you gave it to Trudi should could do all sorts of fancier things, but you could make this one beautiful on your own too.
ReplyDeleteThere is absolutely nothing wrong with your border it looks great! Fab substitute border and a great result just not the first one you'd planned but I often find things are more interesting that way ....a grid of some sort would look fab but so would some Trudi-like feathers!
ReplyDeleteI think the top looks great! I'd either go with Sarah's suggestion of a grid or hand it over to Trudi!
