Eton mess or Di's mess?

This week I have been concentrating on finishing my Strawberry Fields quilt. I now have the quilt top put together. Today the sun is shining, so I have hot-footed it out to the washing line to take some photos to show you my progress.

Sunshine and the wind is blowing!
I have made a whopping mistake though, in piecing this top together. I am afraid that I just didn't pay enough attention to the instructions! This quilt is pieced to be 'on point' but I didn't rotate my blocks, so my blocks are 'on side'. I am too far through to unpick the whole lot but I will never make the same mistake again! The upside is that the quilt has been made for our living room and I wanted to drape it over the back of the sofa. So it would look like this (below).

I went shopping yesterday and bought some green gingham to back the quilt with. My task for this week is to get on with basting and quilting.

My dilemma is that I am at a loss as to how to quilt this one. Should I quilt around the blocks or should I put more detail in? All suggestions would be very welcome!

  1. I dither about quilting all the time so not the best to give you suggestions. But it is going to be a gorgeous quilt finished.

  2. Looks like you have made it your own then - always a good thing in my book! Diagonal lines or fans would be my choice quilting wise! Hope you find some inspiration!

  4. Fantastic quilt. I would take a photo of the quilt and draw your quilt pattern onto that before taking the plunge. After seeing your quilt on Tuesday I would say you are not going to have any problems x

  5. All over stippling would be lovely, but if you wanted to keep it simple, hows about diagonal lines through all of the blocks? Jxo

  6. This quilt is nobody's mess Di! Gorgeous, gorgeous! I hate deciding how to quilt, so I'm not the person to ask - hope you find what works for you though.

  7. It's lovely and I like the way you've set your blocks so there's no way I'd be changing them if I'd done the same! If you fancy quilting in the ditch how about quilting a square in a square on each block? Taking the final photo as an example start quilting at the edge of the outer dotty rectangle (on the left hand side of the block) and go up to the corner (of the same rectangle) and quilt along the 'top' edge of the block, down the other side and along the .bottom'. Then back up the first side until you're back where you started then turn right and quilt along the top of the smaller dotty rectangle and then down the other side to meet the line that's round the edge of the block. Hope that makes sense - I could probably word it better but it's late and my brain isn't working!!

  9. are you hand quilting or machine quilting it Di? I think a Baqptist fan over it would be fabulous, but however you decide, it's gorgeous!
